Hundreds of Avaaz members came together last week to honour Hind Rajab
| Dear friends, | This is us 💔 This is Avaaz members coming together to honour Hind Rajab - the 5-year-old girl from Gaza, who was killed by the Israeli military after pleading with rescuers for help. On the second anniversary of her killing, we stood alongside Hind's mother and unfurled a 1,000m² portrait of her daughter – sending a message far beyond the shores of the Mediterranean: " Do not forget Gaza. Do not abandon its children." As Hind's mother spoke, tears fell. It took 350 Avaazers to hold Hind's portrait up and a helicopter to capture images from the sky. In the midst of profound loss, we made space for hope and showed Hind's mother that she is not alone. Here's a video of what it looked like: | | Hind's image travelled fast - from Europe to Brazil, and from Hong Kong to Palestine - reaching tens of millions of people globally. But it didn't come easily. Behind the scenes were months of organising and a final stretch of curveballs – last-minute helicopter schedule changes, complex logistics to move and lift the giant portrait, and wind that tested every part of the operation. Yet with your help, we pulled it off. We could not have carried out one of our boldest actions ever without this community. You donated, you wrote messages of solidarity to Hind's mother, you showed up on that beach and held Hind's image steady against the wind. Our goal was to create a moment strong enough to break through the silence, and it did.You showed the world that Palestine is not forgotten. And even as Gaza slips from the front pages, we will never stop calling for justice for its children.See how we came together to create this moment — go behind the scenes: Hind's story has inspired an Oscar-nominated film, but it is far from over. Since 2023, at least 20,000 children like her have been killed by Israel. Gaza's healthcare system has collapsed under relentless attacks and children are still dying from preventable injuries and illnesses, denied access to life-saving care. So we supported Hind's mother to meet ministers, and urge governments to act in the name of Gaza's children. In her speech, she said:"The children of Gaza do not ask for pity. They ask for their right to live, to sleep without fear, to play without bombs. To grow up - just to grow. … Do not forget Gaza. Do not abandon its children." Watch Hind's mother's speech now: | | Thank you for being part of this moment. Thank you for standing with Hind's mother - and with the children of Palestine. Thank you for giving us hope when it's needed most.
We could not do any of this without you.
With grief, and with pride,
The whole Avaaz team | | |
