This is an urgent update about the 50 women we're helping to escape from the Taliban. Avaaz has almost secured emergency visas for all the women to relocate to Brazil and other safe countries. Support from Avaaz members has been crucial. But we're still short of funding -- meaning 8 women and their families could be left behind for deportation to the Taliban. We cannot let it happen. These women defied one of the world's most brutal regimes. Many were jailed, tortured, or hunted for speaking out. Now, after escaping to Pakistan, they're hiding from police who are deporting people back to Afghanistan -- where the Taliban are waiting. This is a final, extraordinary appeal because the situation is dire. Can you make a donation to help get these last families to safety? Your entire donation will fund these emergency relocations. If we raise more than needed, we'll use the extra funding to support the court case being built to hold the Taliban accountable for their crimes against women. Let's finish what we started -- and make sure no one is left behind. Donate what you can now:
| Dear friends, | | This is an urgent update about the 50 women we're helping to escape from the Taliban.
Let's finish what we started -- and make sure no one is left behind. Donate what you can now: | | | | | | | | | | | |  Under Taliban rule, women in Afghanistan can't learn, travel, or even sing in public. Women who speak out have been tortured and disappeared, and many fled to neighbouring Pakistan. But now they are being sent back -- together we can help them relocate to safety before it's too late. We're actively working with the Brazilian government to resettle all the women and their families. Thanks to Avaaz members, we're 80% of the way to our goal. But we're still short of funds -- and running out of time.Right now, we simply don't have enough to get all the women to safety. If we raise enough, we could: - Evacuate Afghan women's rights defenders to safer countries, before they're forced back into the Taliban's hands;
- Fund emergency visas, safe housing and medical care for survivors stranded in Pakistan -- some hiding in abandoned buildings to avoid arrest; and
- Strengthen the planned case against the Taliban at the International Court of Justice, collecting testimonies and supporting Afghan activists to share their stories with the world.
This is our final appeal for help -- we will not ask again. Please donate what you can now: | | | | | | | | | | | In the face of horror, these women raised their voices, took to the streets, and dared to dream of a better future. Now, as authoritarian regimes are rising across the globe, intent on crushing human rights, we must meet their courage with our own. We can't afford to look away… and we won't! With hope and determination, Camille, Kaitlin, Lily, Ruth, Bieta, Nate, Sarah, Miguel and the entire team at Avaaz Who are the women we're helping?They are dozens of brave Afghan women who stood up to the Taliban -- and are in immediate danger.- Fatima* was a teacher and organiser of the "Bread, Work, Freedom" protests. She was tortured so badly she suffered spinal injuries. The Taliban has distributed her photo at checkpoints to ensure her capture.
- Amina, a former wheelchair basketball player, lost her leg in a bombing. She stayed to protest for women's rights -- then was tortured for demanding answers after fellow activists disappeared.
- Laila, a journalist, was helping women gain independence by offering sewing classes when the Taliban raided the centre. She was detained, beaten, and warned to flee or be killed.
- Zahra led protests as a teenager and was beaten unconscious in the streets.
Your donation will help evacuate them to safety. It means shelter, legal support, and relocation costs. Without it, they risk being deported straight into Taliban hands.*We've used pseudonyms to hide their identities. PS. This might be your first donation to our movement ever. But what a first donation! Did you know that Avaaz relies entirely on small donations from members like you? That's why we're fully independent, nimble and effective.
